"Design of RC buildings according to the first and the second generation of Eurocode 8: Technical developments and practical implementation"



Prof. Michael Fardis is Honorary President of the International Federation for Structural Concrete (fib), having served as fib President (2009-10). He is Honorary Member of the International Association of Earthquake Engineering (IAEE), having served as IAEE Director (2012-2021). As chairman of the CEN sub-committee CEN/TC250/SC8 for Eurocode 8: “Design of Structures for Earthquake Resistance” (1999-2005), he led the development of its six parts into European Standards. Since 2013 he is Vice Chairman of CEN/TC250: “Structural Eurocodes”.

Since 2016 prof. Michael Fardis is the Editor of “Earthquake Engineering & Structural Dynamics”, the top ranking journal in Earthquake Engineering. He has served as Associate Editor of “Bulletin of Earthquake Engineering” and as Editorial Board Member of journals “Earthquake Spectra”, “Journal of Earthquake Engineering” and “Earthquakes and Structures”.

He holds MSc degrees in Civil Engineering (1977) and Nuclear Engineering (1978) and a PhD in Structural Engineering (1979), all from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he taught at the Civil Engineering Department to the rank of Associate Professor till 1983. He is the editor or co-editor of four books published by Springer from 2010 to 2013. He has about 100 papers in international journals and about 160 in international conference proceedings (among them about keynote or invited lectures). His publications have over 10,200 citations listed in Google Scholar and over 4700 in Scopus (with an h-index of 32). He received the 1993 Wason Medal of the American Concrete Institute for the best paper in materials.

He has co-ordinated the European Community’s research projects “Seismic PerformanceAssessment & Rehabilitation - SPEAR”, “Advanced Centre of Excellence in Structural & Earthquake Engineering - ACES” and “Seismic Engineering Research Infrastructures for European Synergies - SERIES”.

Miguel Fernández Ruiz was born in Madrid (Spain) in 1977. He obtained his diploma in Civil Engineering from the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (Spain) in 2001 and was awarded that year as best student in Civil Engineering in Spain. He later performed his doctoral studies in the same university, and obtained his PhD (cum laude) in 2004. During his PhD studies, he also developed a part-time career in the industry as consultant engineer specialized in composite structures.

In 2004 Prof. Fernández Ruiz moved to École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (Switzerland) as post-doctoral fellow in the laboratory of Structural Concrete. He was later promoted to Senior Scientist and worked part-time, developing also a professional career as partner of a consulting firm specialized in structural design. In 2021, Prof. Fernández Ruiz was appointed full professor in the chair of Structural Design at Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (Spain) where he develops currently his academic activities.

Diplomirao (1990.) i magistrirao (1993) na Građevinskom fakultetu u Beogradu. Doktorat iz geotehničkog inžinjerstva je odbranio 1997 godine na Univerzitetu City (UK). U Velikoj Britaniji ostaje do 2001, gde radi kao geotehnički inžinjer u Ove Arup and Partners i postaje član Britanske zbornice građevinskih inženjera. Na Univerzitetu u Ljubljani (Slovenija) radi od 2005. godine kao docent, a potom vanredni profesor (2014). Od 2005 godine, kada je postao direktor preduzeća IRGO Consulting d.o.o do danas se javlja u ulozi odgovornog projektanta i vođe projekta na preko 30 autoputnih i železničkih tunela u regionu (Slovenija, Bosna i Hercegovina, Crna Gora i Italija), koji su bili izvedeni u skupnoj dužini od približno 60 km. 2020 godine postaje direktor Institutu za rudarstvo, geotehnologiju i životnu sredinu u Ljubljani.

U oblasti istraživanja, dr Vojkan Jovičić bavi se merenjem malih deformaciju u tlu, strukture tla, interkacije konstrukcije i tla, mehaničkog obnašanja peska pri visokim pritiscima, konstitutivnog modeliranja prekonsolidovanih glina. Bio je mentor za 4 zaključene doktorske disertacije i 3 magistarske disertacije na području geotehnike te vođa više istraživačkih projekata sa međunardnim učesnicima. Od 2015. do 2018. godine bio je član uredničkog odbora časopisa Geotechnique.

U periodu od 2012 do 2016 godine je bio Predsednik Slovenačkog geotehničkog društva - SLOGeD, a 2019. godine je izabran za podpredsednika Međunarodnog društva za mehaniku stena (International Society for Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering - ISRM).

Viktor Markelj graduated in 1982. at the Faculty of Civil Engineering, Transportation Engineering and Architecture University of Maribor where he has been giving lectures from 2003 and obtained his phd degree in 2016. He is a co-founder of the structural engineering company Ponting (1990).

Viktor Markelj has designed a numerous structures, mainly bridges, viaducts, tunnels and galleries all over the Europe. From the very rich portfolio with dozens of structures selected projects can be Ada Bridge in Belgrade, Puh bridge in Ptuj (Slovenio), Pedestrian bridge in Gdansk (Poland). He is a member of international associations such as IABSE and fib. Viktor Markelja has been awarded in many times for outstanding achievements in structural engineering.

James (Jim) Pawlikowski is the Principal / Director of Engineering at REX Engineering Group, based in Naperville, with offices also in Chicago, Los Angeles, Orlando, and Charlotte. Prior to joining REX in 2020, Jim was an Associate Director / Senior Structural Engineer at Skidmore, Owings & Merrill in Chicago, having spent 24 years there. In his career at SOM, Jim had lead roles on many significant projects throughout the world, including Burj Khalifa in Dubai, the new NATO headquarters in Brussels, the OKO Tower in Moscow, Tower Palace III in Seoul, and the King Abdullah Financial District in Riyadh. Jim was also one of the lead engineers involved with the Kula Tower in Belgrade.

Jim holds an architectural and structural engineering masters degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He is a licensed structural engineer as well as a LEED Accredited Professional. Jim is currently a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), the American Concrete Institute (ACI), the Chicago Committee on High Rise Buildings (CCHRB), and serves on the Board of Directors for the Structural Engineers Association of Illinois (SEAOI).

Jim is a Clinical Professor and Gertrude Lempp Kerbis Fellow at the University of Illinois at UrbanaChampaign (UIUC) School of Architecture, and an Adjunct Instructor for the UIUC Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. He teaches Design of Tall Buildings, Soil Mechanics and Foundations, and Design of Structural Systems.

Jesper Pihl graduated Civil Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark in 2007. He has more than 15 years of experience within the field of suspension bridge design and is a specialist in design of cable structures including main cable, hanger, cable clamps and saddles.

Jesper Pihl has worked in all aspects of suspension bridge design. He has been working on a large number of suspension bridges from conceptual design, detailed design to construction engineering. Jesper Pihl has among others worked on the detailed design of the Hålogaland Bridge in Norway (1145m main span with A-shaped towers and spatial cable system), the Izmit Bay bridge in Turkey (1550m main span in high seismic zone) and the Canakkale Bridge in Turkey (2023m main span. Trayana Tankova was awarded a PhD in Steel and Composite Construction in 2018 at the University of Coimbra with Distinction and Cum Laude. She is currently working as an assistant professor at the University of Coimbra. Trayana Tankova is an integrated member of ISISE - Institute for Sustainability and Innovation in Structural Engineering. She is responsible for the ISISE Cluster Group - Stability & Connections, member of the ISISE board of Directors, responsible for Science Communication shared with Miguel Azenha from University of Minho and she was recently invited to the Science Communication Manager of the CA20109 Modular Energy Islands for Sustainability and Resilience. She is responsible for the Additive manufacturing lab for metals of the University of Coimbra. She has been strongly involved in several European and national research projects. Currently, she is working on a national project AMConstruction which is a project on additive manufacturing for steel construction and ClimateSAFE which deals with the reliability of the design codes considering the climate change.

The research interests cover various topics in Steel and Composite Construction, more specifically codification and analytical methods, reliability of design rules and their validation based on experimental tests, advanced numerical modelling in the context of member design and joint performance, additive manufacturing, artificial intelligence, and Building Information Modelling.

She has proven herself as a motivated researcher as she has already published 15 articles in international peer reviewed journals and participated in over 10 leading conferences in, e.g. Cape Town, Prague, Hong Kong, Timisoara, Copenhagen among others.
