About the lecture:
As road infrastructure ages, the need for reliable monitoring methods increases, as their results provide a basis for responsible and well-informed maintenance decisions. At the same time, road infrastructure is increasingly exposed to loads that exceed the levels originally considered in design. Such impacts are the result of extreme weather events, the continuous growth of heavy traffic, and the increasing number of exceptional transports. Particularly under conditions of elevated risk, frequent inspections and even continuous monitoring of road structures are becoming increasingly important. This is especially relevant for structures that contain sensitive and difficult-to-access structural elements, such as reinforcing steel located on the embankment side of retaining walls. Furthermore, digitalization, the availability of large datasets, and rapid technological development are opening entirely new possibilities for comprehensive and continuous monitoring of road infrastructure. The lecture provides an overview of these technologies, with particular emphasis on new and promising approaches. In addition, it is necessary to examine whether these new technologies are economically justified for maintenance planning. Essentially, the value of the information obtained through such technologies must be assessed. Finally, it is of interest to investigate whether data available from external sources, such as those generated by vehicles, can be utilized for comprehensive monitoring of road infrastructure.
